The Hahne & Co. Department Store Building
NEWARK, NJ | 2017
Originally dedicated on September 1, 1901, the Hahne & Co. Department Store Building was once the flagship store for the high end department store chain and was considered one of the Newark’s “Big 3” department stores. The store was closed in 1987 and remained vacant until 2013, slowly slipping into disrepair. The redevelopment effort included full restoration and adaptive reuse as well as a new 9 story adjacent addition. The building is a mixed use development and includes a new Whole Foods Market Grocery Story, Rutgers University Express Newark Arts Collaborative, 160 residential apartments, and over 100,000 sqft of commercial and office space. The rehabilitation also included the restoration of the buildings atrium, historically called the Grand Court which includes a 200ft long skylight which is original to the building.
Listed on the state and national register of historic places, the restoration conforms to the Secretary of Interior’s strict standards for historic rehabilitation. Inglese Architecture and Engineering is provided architectural, MEP, and full construction administration services for the project.
